As you know, this bill removes the requirement that municipalities, schools, colleges, and universities use official holiday designations. I fully support this bill because I believe that these entities should be able to make their own determinations without a state overreach that mandates specific labeling or language. It is unreasonable to expect that every education system and municipality should be forced to use a label like Columbus Day, for example, that are inconsistent with their understanding of the role of Christopher Columbus in the colonization, resultant disease, forced assimilation, and annihilation of populations.

As a proud and patriotic American Citizen and a recently recognized Italian Citizen through my Father, I oppose this bill. Of the twelve "federal" holidays, Columbus Day is the only holiday honoring and commemorating immigrants to the United States, from all countries, not just Italy.. Both of my parent's families came to the US from Italy, I was very pleased when the bill reinforcing Columbus Day in New Hampshire was passed as a State Holiday.

Christopher Columbus was a hero! Please do NOT replace or attempt to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People's Day (again). Columbus Day celebrates Italian Americans and remembers the Italian immigrants who were lynched in New Orleans in 1891. Thank you, Jean Sarno

As an Italian American I want to remind the committee of the significance of Columbus Day to the Italian community. When Italians immigrated to the US we were not welcome. We were forced to live in ghettos, faced discrimination in all aspects of American life. This holiday made us believe that we belonged, that we had contributed something important to our new homeland. Taking this holiday away would be wiping away the injustices we received and the pride we felt being American and our contributions to our new homeland. In addition, Columbus had no idea what would happen in this land once he discovered it for Europe. To hold him to current day standards is ridiculous.
