We need to do all we can to address this problem if we want to have a democracy.

Dear House Judiciary Committee members, I am opposed to bill HB476 that would further restrict abortion, reproductive healthcare, in New Hampshire. As you may know, 78% of New Hampshire citizens believe there should be a right to get an abortion, in every state of the U.S. Also, the great majority - I believe it is 68% - of us here in New Hampshire oppose a 15-week abortion ban. Therefore, your opposition to this bill would be representing the will of the people you represent. On a personal note, my niece was able to obtain an abortion after a rape that she would never have been able to prove, before Roe V. Wade was overturned. She went on to have to beautiful healthy boys. I believe all women and families should have that opportunity. Please oppose HB476 and support the health and welfare of New Hampshire families. Thank you for your service to the people of our State.

I think one of the most lasting ways to bring down the cost of living is to prevent corrupt officials from holding office. Since deepfakes are one of the ways corrupt officials snag a spot in our government, it makes sense to me to have a penalty for that behavior.

Kat McGhee, Hillsborough 35, Hollis We’re here today to talk about a bill that asks us to help voters with deception versus honesty. There’s an old saying that a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth can put its boots on. Once a lie is released, people will believe it even if the truth comes out. As a society, we’ve been lenient with lies. It’s not illegal to lie, even as a public official in a position of trust. But there is a cost to abusing that trust. Trust itself gets eroded and the whole system of democracy is weakened. I’m sure many of us remember Superman’s motto: Truth, justice and the American way. Truth is primary. It’s pivotal, it’s essential to a democracy. In an age of artificial intelligence, and synthetic media technology, lawmakers have to figure out how to keep up with laws that protect citizens from predatory and unfair practices. In some cases, people will lose money. In other cases, they will be deceived for the profit. But this bill focuses solely on the effects of fakery on our citizens and elections. HB630 doesn’t seek to prevent deep fakes. It seeks to give NH guardrails that say that creators bear the responsibility for deceptive content as fakery so the people of NH are not manipulated or deceived to their own detriment. In an age of deep fakes, where we can make politicians say things they never said, or convince people something happened, that never did, we need to remember that all the old euphemisms are also still true. Seeing is believing; lawmakers are responsible for ensuring fakery isn’t embraced so that the public loses more trust in their elected leaders. Think of your constituents. Think of what a crucial time this is in our history for technology and artificial intelligence. This bill is simple and elegant. I ask that you vote HB630 Ought to Pass so that the people of NH are not being deceived with our complicity. It does not take much imagination to see what harm it will do to have synthetic media turning out fake reality. We have the chance to protect impressionable voters from a preventable scam. If we truly want election integrity, then we want voters to have access to good information. If we also have to accept not so good information in the mix, let’s require it be accurate and not created without the sanity check of reality. Let’s use our power as lawmakers, to make sure people can continue to ‘believe their eyes’. Thanks, Kat
